It’s that time of year again: CrossFit Games Director Dave Castro is releasing Regional workouts ahead of time. The Regional competitions — which take place across three weekends from May 19th through June 4th — will begin with the following event.
(This is true for the Individuals; the Games squad hasn’t announced any workouts for the Teams just yet, so no word on whether it will be a modified version of the below or something completely different.)
For time: (athletes wear a weighted 5.11 Tactical Vest for the workout)
Run 1200 Meters
Then, 12 Rounds:
4 Strict Handstand Push-ups
8 Chest to bar Pull-ups
12 Air Squats
Of course, in true Dave Castro fashion, the workout was announced on his Instagram account late Sunday night, less than two weeks before the first Regionals weekend.
And now — finally — we know what that weighted vest teaser was all about. Could the weighted vest show up as an element of multiple Regionals workouts this year? Surely, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
If previous years are any indication, Castro and the CrossFit Games social media team will gradually tease out more and more Regionals events as we get closer to the 19th, with the final few — for both Individuals and Teams — likely not coming until a few days before the first competitions kick off.
With a new location (Madison, Wisconsin) and a new, later start date in August instead of July, this year’s Reebok CrossFit Games are bringing a lot of new logistical elements to the table. But in order to get to that phase of competition, both Individual and Team athletes who performed well in the Open must advance through Regionals in order to make it to August’s Games.
