Maddy Myers has clean & jerked 122 kilograms (267 pounds) at the Junior World Weightlifting Championships in Tokyo, Japan, setting a new Junior American record in the 63kg category. Check out a clip of her awesome performance below.
In a post on Instagram, she wrote:
Went 4/6 and ended up with 91kg (200lbs) snatch and a 122kg (269lb) clean and jerk Beyond blessed to have my personal coach (CJ Martin) fly all the way out to Tokyo and have (Ben Hwa) to help in the back (as always)
Myers is a familiar name to many weightlifting fans. She was named best lifter at the past two Junior National Championships, won the past two American Open Championships, is the reigning Junior Pan American champion in her weight class, and came in ninth at the last Junior World Championships. She also owns the Junior American records in the clean & jerk and the total… in both the 58kg and 63kg weight classes. (She competed as a 58kg athlete in 2015.)
Below, you can see her set a previous American junior American clean & jerk record in April last year, with a 120kg (264.5lb) lift.
But Myer’s experience in strength sports goes beyond weightlifting, as she is a terrific CrossFit athlete to boot. She was the youngest woman to compete at the 2015 Reebok CrossFit® Games, but she had to withdraw after collapsing from heat exhaustion from completing Murph, later suffering from renal failure and rhabdomyolysis.
She returned to compete at the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games with Team Invictus (they placed 14th overall) and in 2017 she came in tenth place in the CrossFit Open for the Southern California region, including a first place finish in the 17.3 workout. It might come as no surprise that 17.3 was heavy on Olympic lifts, consisting of 63 squat snatches and 153 pull-ups. Fortunately, Myers knows how to snatch.
We haven’t even mentioned that she spent her youth as a competitive gymnast and at age 14 competed in America’s national rock climbing team. Maddy Myers is seriously, seriously strong, and she absolutely earned her new Junior American record. Congrats to Maddy and all of her teammates!
