Obstacle Course Confirmed for 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games

Last night, Dave Castro confirmed on his Instagram page that an obstacle course will be making a return at the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games. The last time we saw an obstacle course in the games was in 2012 at the Marine Corps’ course in Camp Pendleton.

Castro’s photo included insights and a few stats from the 2012 CrossFit Games, along with screenshots covering a few of 2017’s top athletes and how they placed in 2012. He writes, “Spencer Hendel won the male division and Rich Froning took third. Annie Thorisdottir took third in female division. Chris Spealler was 11th and Neal Maddox 10th. This year, see these athletes, and more, compete on our custom designed obstacle course we are building in Madison for the 2017 CrossFit Games.”

The exact specs of the course have yet to be released, and we’re still unsure if it’s going to be similar to 2012’s setup, but we do know one thing: This 2017 course is being custom built, so we wouldn’t be surprised if it had a unique Castro twist to it.

There’s also been no mention about which athletes will be competing on the course. Although, we’re guessing it will be similar to 2012 (due to Castro’s Instagram description), and both the female and male individuals will have a run at the course.

Check out the men’s course from 2012 that shows a younger Rich Froning coming in second for his heat.

The 2012 women’s obstacle course was similar in setup to the men’s, so will 2017 be an updated replica of what we’ve seen before?

Time will tell.

From the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games events Castro has announced thus far, it’s looking like the athletes need to be working on their metabolic and sprint demands. Castro’s first announced event involves what’s known as an aquathon, or continuous bouts of running, swimming, and running. Then a week later, he announced that bikes will be making an appearance – all events requiring ample conditioning.

We’re still waiting on the announcements for the exact specs of each event, and the order in which they’ll be taking place.
