CrossFit Team Series Takes New Formatting for 2017

Late last week, CrossFit announced that their annual team series will be taking in a new format. In previous years, teams were composed of four, with two men and two women, but this year teams will come in the form of pairs. Check out the full rundown of the announcement below that covers what’s different in each area of competition.

How Are Teams Different?

Athletes will be able to compete two men, two women, or form a mix gender pair.

Additional Age Groups

There have been age groups added to each division. In past years there have been three age groups: 14-17, Open, and 40+. This year, the team series will offer similar age groups to the CrossFit Open, which include: Open (all ages), 14-15, 16-17, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59 and 60+.

Who Can Team Up?

Like previous years, athletes can select whoever they want to be their partner, so they don’t need to attend the same gym, or live in the same area to form a team. The main difference is how teams will be split into different age groups.

Mixed Aged Teams

If two partners coming together don’t compete in the same age group, then they’ll be added the hardest division by default. CrossFit provided a few examples stating, “If two athletes aged 36 and 61 team up, they’ll go in All Ages and 35-39. If two teenagers aged 17 and 14 team up, they’ll go in All Ages and 16-17.”

Workouts

Athletes can choose between the prescribed workout or a scaled version (upon their release), and have the option to select a scaled workout for one workout, but then return to the normally prescribed workout for the next.

When It Starts, Finishes, and Submitting Scores

The team series will take place in late September and span over two consecutive weeks (Start: September 20th – End: October 2nd).

There will be a live announcement releasing the first two sets of partner workouts on Wednesday, September 20th, and then teams will have until Monday, September 25th to submit scores. The following set of workouts will be released on Wednesday, September 27th, and teams will have until Monday, October 2nd to submit. Aka each week, teams will have five days to submit final scores.

Like the Open, teams can submit scores by a judge at a participating affiliate, or submit a video link that’s been shared on YouTube.

Prizes

Prizes for all divisions and overall standings are listed as followed: First $10,000, second $5,000, third $3,000, fourth $2,500, fifth $2,250, and sixth-10th $2,000, $1,750, $1,500, $1,250, $1,000, respectively, and so forth.
