At the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games athlete dinner held Monday, July 31st, Dave Castro made some surprising announcements including two event reveals. Granted, surprising for Castro at this point is relative, but one of the events will be a CrossFit Games first.
First, he announced that there will be a cyclocross event at this year’s Games on Thursday, after the Run Swim Run event. This answers all of the speculative questions around the biking event after Castro’s first subtle bike announcement.
Second, he shared that there will be a muscle-up clean ladder event, which takes place on Saturday. Keep in mind, both of these events are for individual competitors only.
Check out the details of each event below.
On Wednesday, riders will familiarize themselves with the course and perform a time trial. Their time will determine where they place for the following day, aka, which heat they’ll be racing in.
There will be two heats of 20 riders each per gender, and an athlete’s score is the amount of time it takes them to complete a full three laps. And there’s a time cap of 30-minutes.
This type of bike race may be a first for the Games, but it’s not the first time we’ve seen bikes used in an event. At the 2012 Games, individual competitors had to bike around 8 kilometers for the first day’s triathlon styled event.
Muscle-Up Clean Ladder
As of right now, this is the only event that’s been shared for individual competitors on Saturday. The workout details are listed below.
- Total Rounds: 8
- Muscle-Up (per round): 4
- Clean (per round): 2 with ascending weight
- Time Cap: 10 Minutes
Each athlete will complete four bar muscle-ups before moving on to their respective two cleans. The ascending weight for the men and women is shared below.
- Men: 225, 245, 265, 285, 305, 320, 335, and 350 lb.
- Women: 145, 160, 175, 190, 205 ,215, 225, and 235 lb.
An athlete’s score is based off the amount of time it takes them to complete the eight rounds. If they’re unable to complete all of the rounds, then their score will be based off of total reps completed.
