Day one of the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games is in full swing for the individual competitors. The first day has been relatively quiet so far in terms of upsets and injuries, but there are a few big names at the top of the leaderboard. After the first two events, Samantha Briggs is in the lead for the women, while Jonne Koski holds first for the men.
Tia-Clair Toomey and Mat Fraser sit in second after two events.
The first two events were made up of two cardio + sprint-esque tasks, which cut out a lot of top athlete’s best attributes including maximal strength and strength endurance.
- Event 1: Run (1.5 miles), Swim (500 meters), Run (1.5 miles)
- Event 2: Cyclocross (3 laps 1.5 miles ea, 4.5 miles in total)

Fun fact, three out of four CrossFit HQ employees have current second place Tia-Clair Toomey as their number one or two pick for winning the Games, yet no one had current first place holder (and 2013 Champ) Samantha Briggs in their top three. On the men’s side, no one predicted Jonne Koski in their top three, but all four HQ employees have Fraser finishing first or second.
We still have one more event taking place this evening, so these rankings will likely change before day one is fully complete. It’s a 13-11-9-7-5 rep scheme of muscle-ups and squat snatches.
The final Day One event begins at 4:30 p.m. CST for women athletes, and 5:30 p.m. for the men.
Tomorrow individual athletes will compete in at least three events announced so far, though more may come. Remember all events are in Central Standard Time.
- Sprint-O-Course (Men 10 a.m., Women 11:18 a.m.)
- 1-RM Snatch (Men 2:10 p.m., Women 3:15 p.m.)
- Triple G Chipper (Men 6:00 p.m., Women 6:40 p.m.)
