The 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games have come to a close, and Tia-Clair Toomey (Australia) and Mat Fraser (USA) are the Individual Champions. But their competitions on the weekend couldn’t have shaped up more differently.
This was the first year the Games had ever been held outside of California, and Madison, Wisconsin, served as a fitting backdrop for an exciting competition.
It’s the second-consecutive title for Fraser and his fourth-consecutive podium appearance. Fraser won his first title in 2016 in convincing fashion after two years of finishing in second, setting a record for margin of victory by points. The competition worked out similarly for Fraser in 2017, and he only seemed to get stronger and faster in the later events. On the Men’s side, it was truly a race for second and third as Fraser dominated almost the whole way through.
By finishing the minimum work requirement in Sunday’s final Event, Fraser secured his title.
It’s the third podium appearance for Toomey, who also competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics in weightlifting representing Australia. She finished in second her first two years at the Games. It’s the first-ever CrossFit Games Individual win for an athlete from Australia.
She narrowly edged out fellow Australian Kara Webb for the overall victory in what CrossFit’s commentators called the narrowest points margin in Games history. After several near misses, these marks Webb’s first-ever CrossFit Games podium appearance. Iceland’s Annie Thorisdottir — the 2011 & 2012 Individual champ — returned to the podium and finished in third place overall. She ties Rich Froning for the most-ever Individual podium appearances with five apiece.
Two-time defending champion Katrin Davidsdottir (Iceland) finished in 5th place overall.
Earlier in the day, Wasatch CrossFit beat two-time defending Affiliate Cup champions CrossFit Mayhem to take home the Team title.
